To get a recycling bin, go to the DPW yard at

Franey Rd, Somerville between 8am-4pm Mon. thru Fri. Remember
to bring PROOF OF RESIDENCE (utility bill).
- You can recycle glass bottles, metal cans, plastic containers
(#1-7) & milk/juice cartons all in the same bin.
- Recycle
batteries, cell phones, and printer cartridges in the battery
buckets at the entrance to Carmichael Dining Hall

- (CFL) COMPACT FLUORESCENT bulbs are available for free at TCI (behind Miller, across the parking lot from Hillel, next to Oxfam) when you trade in your old incandescent bulbs for them.
- You'll SAVE about $8.00/year in electricity costs for every bulb in your house you replace with CFL's.
- Costco sells an 8-pack of CFL's for $7.00

to purchase Bio
Heating Oil a more sustainable blend of standard
heating oil and oil refined from vegetable oil, recycled cooking
grease, or animal fats. Bio Heating Oil is formulated to work
in any standard oil heating system.
- Turn Down the Heat - you'll save about 2% on
your heating bill for every degree lower you set your thermostat
- Add insulation to your water heater - a water heater blanket costs $19.98 at Hillside Hardware and will save about 7% of your water heating costs over the course of the year.
- Put weatherstripping around exterior doors
and along the threshold. Hillside Hardware sells it for $4 per door
- Wrapping your hot water pipes with Pipe Wrap
can save up to 25% of the energy used to heat water - $4 can buy enough for 12 ft. of pipe at Hillside Hardware

- Turning off your computer at night (for 8 hours) will save at
least $22 per year on energy
- If you have a window A/C unit, make sure to remove it before
the winter season.
- Set your water heater to 120°F (warm setting). Your water
will still be as hot as you want it, and you'll save energy.
- Use cold water when doing laundry - 80-90% of the energy used
by a washer goes into heating the water.
- If you have a fireplace, remember to close the damper
when it's not in use - lots of heat can escape up the chimney.
- Keep your refrigerator coils (probably in the back) dust free to keep it running efficiently.
